Vision therapy

Now Available at Amarillo Family Eyecare

Optometric Vision Therapy is not just eye exercises. The goal is not to strengthen eye muscles — they are already incredibly strong. Instead, vision therapy is a progressive, doctor-supervised program designed to improve how the eyes and brain work together.

Vision therapy:
 • Is individualized to fit each patient’s visual needs
 • Helps students develop or improve fundamental visual skills
 • Improves visual comfort, ease, and efficiency
 • Enhances how visual information is processed and interpreted

What Is Optometric Vision Therapy?

Personalized Vision Therapy Programs

Each student’s program is carefully designed to target areas of greatest challenge. Therapy sessions include structured procedures, exercises, games, and activities that strengthen:
 • Visual awareness
 • Visual efficiency
 • Visual processing
 • Visually guided movement

Sessions are one-on-one with a trained optometric vision therapist and are designed to be fun, challenging, and confidence-building — supporting efficient reading, writing, and visual learning skills.

For students diagnosed with amblyopia (lazy eye) or strabismus (eye turn), therapy programs are customized to address these specific visual conditions.

Home activities are provided to reinforce progress and may help shorten the overall length of therapy.

Joan Reneau

Optometric Vision Therapist

Joan Reneau has been a dedicated optometric vision therapist since 2007, helping patients strengthen visual skills and improve functional vision. With a compassionate, patient-centered approach, she creates a positive and encouraging environment where individuals of all ages can build confidence as their visual abilities grow.

Joan received her formal vision therapy training under the mentorship of Dr. Robert Sanet, former director of the San Diego Center for Vision Care. Internationally recognized as a leader in vision therapy, Dr. Sanet’s expertise and commitment to advancing the field have had a lasting influence on Joan’s clinical practice.

Before transitioning into vision therapy, Joan taught Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten for 23 years in Christian schools in Amarillo. Her extensive background in early

childhood education gives her unique insight into learning-related vision challenges and allows her to connect naturally with children and families. She understands the vital role visual skills play in academic success and confidence.

Born in Akron, Ohio, Joan moved to Amarillo in 1980 and is proud to serve the community she calls home. She and her husband, Russ, have two sons, two daughters-in-law, and three cherished grandchildren. Outside of the office, Joan enjoys spending time with her family, gardening, and investing in her church and local community.
