Your baby’s first smile, first steps, and first words are milestones you’ll never forget—but healthy vision is an important milestone, too.

At Amarillo Family Eyecare, Dr. Mackenzie Weir proudly participates in the InfantSEE® program, offering a no-cost comprehensive eye and vision assessment for infants between 6 and 12 months of age. This one-time exam is available regardless of insurance coverage or family income through a public health program managed by Optometry Cares® – The AOA Foundation.

Many eye conditions don’t have obvious symptoms. Even if your baby’s eyes appear healthy, some vision problems can only be detected during a comprehensive eye examination.

Early detection is important because healthy vision plays a major role in learning, motor development, and how children interact with the world around them.

The American Optometric Association recommends a baby’s first comprehensive eye exam between 6 and 12 months of age, followed by additional exams throughout childhood.

Why Does My Baby Need an Eye Exam?

InfantSEE® is a nationwide public health program that provides one free comprehensive eye assessment for babies ages 6 to 12 months.

The program is designed to help identify eye and vision concerns early, before they affect a child’s development.

There are:
  • No fees
  • No insurance requirements
  • No income qualifications
  • No referral needed (unless required by your insurance)

Participating optometrists volunteer their time because every child deserves the opportunity for healthy vision.

What Is the InfantSEE Program?

Your baby’s appointment is gentle, comfortable, and designed specifically for infants.

During the exam, our doctors evaluate:
  • Eye health
  • Focusing ability
  • Eye alignment
  • Eye movement and tracking
  • Nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism
  • Overall visual development

Since babies can’t read an eye chart, we use specialized equipment to evaluate how their eyes are developing. Most parents are surprised by how much we can learn during an infant eye exam.

What Happens During the Exam?

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the exam really free?

Yes. The InfantSEE assessment is provided at no cost for eligible infants between 6 and 12 months of age.

Does my baby need insurance?

No. The InfantSEE program is available regardless of insurance coverage or household income.

My pediatrician checks my baby’s eyes. Isn’t that enough?

Pediatric wellness visits are important, but they aren’t the same as a comprehensive eye examination. An InfantSEE assessment uses specialized equipment to evaluate eye health and vision development that can’t be performed during a routine vision screening.

What if my child is older than one year?

We provide comprehensive eye exams for children of all ages and would be happy to schedule an appointment.
